Tepper deposit: Check

Submitted the confirmation deposit for Tepper. There is still some significant gap in the money required and the money I have. Credilla will get back by the end of this week. Haven’t even started with the I-20 stuff.

To cope with this all, I have started going to the gym again. Hope I will be back to my pre-application season form by fall.

Why Tepper rocks

There are a lot of reasons. Lets’s start with the one which prompted this post. They increased my scholarship. Yaay!! I just love people who give me reasons to do my happy dance in these times of fund-raising misery and mounting work pressure due to our upcoming product release. I got up at 2:30 AM in the night to randomly check my mails. This has become a weird habit after the months long admission cycle. I get up in the middle of the night to check my gmail and write down replies which I save as drafts and get proofread by friends in the morning (this is important people….never send mails that you have written in a groggy state). Well, I got up, opened my laptop and there it was….sitting in my inbox-

Dear ccatcher,

I hope this mail finds you well. The scholarship committee was able to meet regarding your request, and I am very happy to inform you that the…..

by the time I reached this point, I had started dancing around. Yaay!!

So much for the trigger for this post. Now let’s get down to business, i.e. why I think Tepper rocks-

Current Students- I have interacted with a lot of folks at Tepper by now….over phone, email, FB and blogs. They all are awesome people. What makes them great is the ability each individual has to make you feel comfortable and good about yourself. All my phone calls were scheduled in early morning time slots in IST. Not being much of a morning person, I received all the calls after being woken up by the ringing phone itself. You can imagine how I must have sounded on the phone (you got it right….like an incoherent mumbling imbecile). But the people on the other side of the phone were unbelievably graceful, even apologetic about having to call me that early in the morning. Where do you meet people like that? They are at the place I aspire to be at, are busy with their own MBA stuff, are doing me a huge favor by taking the time and then giving me a call and then they are apologetic about disturbing me?? I was completely humbled by this awesome attitude. Hats off guys!!

Faculty- I was introduced to one of the profs by a common friend. He wrote to me after the introduction email and told me about a lot of stuff at Tepper. He even went ahead and asked others for information so that he can answer my questions. Great….isn’t it?? Well, it doesn’t stop there. He finds out information about the opportunities at Tepper in the area I want to build a career in (which has nothing to do with his area of specialization). I get even more humbled and impressed. Bottomline…people at Tepper really care. As Buddha has said, “Caring for your fellow human beings can alleviate all the sorrows of the world.”

Adcom- They really are the best. My Tepper interview was the most enjoyable interview I have had till date. Interacting with the adcom people has been great. They promptly reply to the emails and really strive to help you out. Especially after the increased scholarship, I am totally in love with the Tepper adcom 🙂

Career Opportunities- For someone with career aspirations similar to mine, Tepper is the ultimate answer…the Zen of high-tech. For people looking out to decide on bschools, I strongly suggest having a look at the new curiculum and the numerous opportunities through the clubs. Will write a detailed post on this soon.

Till then…to all my fellow admits…happy fund raising !!

Meanwhile in Ithaca

While I am stuck in my own intricate web of get-the-loan-documents-together-workflow, someone in Ithaca decides to teach me a lesson for sending the same email (with minor edits) to multiple club officers.  This is another DO NOT in the bschool application process. Never ever, copy paste the mail content and send it to multiple people at a school. As fate would have it, people who go to bschool together, talk to each other. As Murphy would have it, people, you sent your copied-pasted mail to, will definitely talk and will definitely mention the trashy mail they got from a wait listed prospective recently.

So, however depressed or desperate you are feeling, if you are getting motivated to do a batch email with the same subject…..STOP…..go out, get sloshed, watch a movie, go dancing….do anything but DO NOT SEND the same mail to multiple people. This process is overwhelming and is really taxing to one’s drafting skills. I literally whine for every new piece of text I have to write. Make a point to get your important mails proofread by some friends. In the end I have this piece of wisdom straight from the one mail that came my way from Ithaca-

“You’re climbing a mountain.  You may be eager to keep taking steps as much as possible to get to the top but remember – it’s better to stand still than take a wrong step that will lead you to fall.”

Financing the ahembeeyaay: Loan Documents

I have submitted the documents to the credilla guys. Finally, I met the sweet girl I had been talking to and she seemed very nice. Hopes restored !

Bad part was that I got fined for not wearing a seat belt while driving to the bank. The thing is that I was rushing from work and the bank was about to be closed. So, I forgot the seat belt. As Murphy would have it, there was this cop who came over and fined me 😦

Now, I have this intricate algorithm for getting the documents. My sister is co-signing my loan and she is away on a maternity leave. So, she can’t do much running around and she doesn’t own a scanner. We have this awesome workaround. She clicks photos of the documents (WW2 spy style) and mails them to me. To get well focussed images, single documents are clicked in multiple parts. I pick the sharp images, correct the lens distortion in photoshop and then stitch the parts together in photoshop. So, my sister is really learning how to focus her new DSLR and I am really using the align layers feature of photoshop and finding loopholes in the algorithm. But this feature was designed for stitching images together….not for stitching the pics of documents taken from random angles and focal lengths.

If the bank asks for a better copy again, I am just going to go home and get the original documents.

Financing the ahembeeyaay: Credilla

Right from the time I heard from Tepper, I have been worried about the finances. I checked various options to borrow from India. HDFC’s credilla came across as the best option. So I called them up to find out about the details. Turns out that they extend loans up to the full cost of attendance. So, it’s today that I submitted the loan form and the documents. I somewhere in my unconscious really hate these loan people for being so unabashed about inquiring into my and my family’s “net worth”. Yes, one person I talked to used that word and I immediately put him in the “people I instinctively dislike” category. This feels tiring. Anyways, I have given most of the documents…some are missing. They have told me that they will be writing to me if there are any documents missing. Once I submit all the missing documents, they say that they will get back with their “evaluation” in a week’s time.
